Sankranti Vacation Holidays May Be Extended In Hyderabad

  • Sankranti vacation holidays and possible extension in Telangana schools
  • Teacher unions seek Sankranti vacation holidays extension due to festivals

Hyderabad: Sankranti vacation holidays in Hyderabad and other districts of Telangana may be extended in 2026, as teacher unions urge the state government to consider additional days due to overlapping festivals. As per the academic calendar issued by the Telangana government, schools are scheduled to observe Sankranti vacation holidays from January 11 to January 15, 2026. However, the break may not end there.

According to the official academic calendar, five holidays were declared for all schools except missionary institutions during the Sankranti period. However, the timing of two festivals has raised demands for an extension. Shab-e-Meraj and Kanumu fall immediately after the notified holidays, on January 17 and January 16 respectively. Therefore, teacher unions believe that reopening schools as scheduled may not be practical.

Meanwhile, unions have formally urged the government to extend the Sankranti vacation holidays until January 18. They argue that although Kanumu and Shab-e-Meraj are optional holidays, many parents are unlikely to send their children to school during these festival days. As a result, attendance may remain low if schools reopen earlier than January 19, which is a Monday.

Also, educators feel that reopening schools for just one or two days between festivals and a weekend will disrupt academic flow. Therefore, they suggest that resuming classes from January 19 would ensure better attendance and smoother academic continuity. However, the final decision rests with the state government, which has not yet announced any changes to the holiday schedule.

Later in the academic calendar, schools in Hyderabad and other districts will prepare for the Formative Assessment Four examinations. As per the schedule, schools must complete FA Four by February 7 for Class X students. Meanwhile, classes I to IX must complete the assessment by February 28. School managements are closely watching developments, as any extension of Sankranti vacation holidays may affect preparation timelines.

At present, the government has not confirmed whether it will approve the requested extension. Therefore, parents, teachers, and students are waiting for an official announcement on Sankranti vacation holidays in Telangana.
