- Hydroponic marijuana seizure exposes ongoing smuggling attempts
- Customs seize 14 kg hydroponic marijuana at RGIA
Hyderabad: Customs officials at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport seized around 14 kg of hydroponic marijuana during a check on Friday. The seizure took place when two passengers arrived from Qatar. Officials detected the contraband during routine inspection. They then took the passengers into custody for questioning. The case has again drawn attention to repeated attempts to smuggle drugs into the country through air routes.
According to customs officials, the seized hydroponic marijuana has an estimated market value of about Rs 14 crore. The officials found the drug concealed with the two passengers during checks after arrival. Later, they detained the passengers and began questioning them to trace the source and route of the smuggling attempt. Meanwhile, officials continued verification of travel details linked to the seizure.
The hydroponic marijuana seizure comes amid a reported rise in smuggling of drugs grown abroad. Customs and other enforcement agencies have noted a pattern in recent cases involving hydroponic marijuana. The drug, which is often cultivated outside India, has surfaced repeatedly at major airports. However, officials said attempts to traffic the drug into the country continue despite tighter checks and increased surveillance.
Meanwhile, customs officials pointed out that this was not an isolated incident. Just two days earlier, officials recovered 1 kg of hydroponic marijuana from an Air India Express flight. That recovery highlighted the persistence of smugglers who continue to test airport security systems. Therefore, authorities remain on alert and continue to strengthen checks on international passengers.
Customs officials said questioning of the detained passengers was underway to gather more details about the network involved. They are also examining whether the two cases are linked in any way. The latest hydroponic marijuana seizure at RGIA adds to growing concerns among enforcement agencies about drug trafficking through international flights. Officials stressed that surveillance will continue as attempts to smuggle drugs remain a serious challenge.
