The Varanasi District Gold Shopkeepers Association has announced a gold sale ban for customers who enter jewellery shops wearing face coverings. The decision applies to buyers wearing burqas, masks, scarves, or helmets. According to the association, the move aims to prevent theft and fraud incidents reported in recent weeks. Therefore, jewellers have decided to enforce stricter entry rules across the district.
Officials of the association said several jewellery thefts occurred in different districts recently. In many cases, thieves used masks or burqas to hide their identity. As a result, shopkeepers faced difficulty identifying suspects after crimes. Therefore, the gold sale ban was introduced as a precautionary step. The association stated that this rule will help protect goods and improve safety inside shops.
UP Jewellers Association Varanasi District president Kamal Singh spoke to the media on the issue. He explained that jewellery sales would not be allowed to customers who keep their faces covered. He said that when people commit crimes while hiding their faces, it becomes difficult to identify them later. Therefore, he said the gold sale ban was necessary to reduce risk. He also confirmed that boards have been placed outside shops informing customers about the rule.
Meanwhile, Kamal Singh clarified that the gold sale ban does not target any religion. He said the decision focuses only on security concerns. He added that shopkeepers want to ensure the safety of their goods and staff. Therefore, customers will need to remove face coverings before entering jewellery stores. Traders believe this step will help them clearly identify every buyer.
UP Jewellers Association president Satya Narayan Seth also commented on the issue. He said similar gold sale ban rules already exist in Jhansi and other districts of Uttar Pradesh. According to him, these measures have helped reduce crime in jewellery shops. He noted that many people have welcomed the decision taken in Varanasi as well.
Later, traders said that identifying customers at entry will help prevent fraud attempts. They also said such steps could discourage criminals from targeting jewellery stores. Meanwhile, public reactions have been mixed, but many have supported the move for security reasons. Several citizens commented that the gold sale ban could help reduce theft incidents.
