Telangana High Court Bars Police From Forcing Traffic Challan Payments
Hyderabad,Jan. 20 (Maxim News): The Telangana High Court on Tuesday directed police not to forcibly collect pending traffic challans from vehicle owners.
The court clearly stated that motorists cannot be compelled to pay fines on the spot for pending challans.
The High Court said police should not seize vehicle keys or stop vehicles to force immediate payment. It clarified that coercive methods in the name of pending traffic challans violate due legal process. However, it added that citizens may voluntarily clear pending challans at their convenience.
The court said if authorities intend to recover pending traffic challans, they must follow legal procedures. It instructed police to issue court notices and recover fines through judicial channels instead of roadside enforcement. The judges stressed that law enforcement must respect citizens’ rights while enforcing traffic regulations.
The directions came while hearing a petition related to traffic challan recovery practices. The court observed that enforcement should remain transparent and lawful. It further emphasized that compliance must arise from legal notice and not intimidation.
The ruling is expected to bring clarity for motorists across Telangana.
Meanwhile, traffic police have been asked to strictly adhere to the High Court’s instructions while handling pending challan cases. (Maxim News)
