“You cannot play with the privacy of our country. We will not allow you to share even a single digit of our data,” said Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Suryakant, reprimanding US-based Meta. He warned that if the country’s laws are not followed, it will have to leave India. The Supreme Court recently heard a petition related to WhatsApp’s 2021 privacy policy. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the government, argued that sharing user data for commercial purposes is exploitation (WhatsApp policy row).

The Chief Justice directly questioned Meta representatives about whether the country’s millions of poor and illiterate people can understand the privacy policy (Exit India warning). They said that in some cases, understanding Meta policies is becoming a problem for them, and then asked how the people of rural India can understand it. Meanwhile, a group of WhatsApp international users recently filed a petition in a US court alleging that the Meta engineering team can read other people’s WhatsApp messages. In this context, the latest warnings from the Supreme Court are putting Meta in more trouble. (Maxim News)
