Large protests took place in Srinagar and parts of Jammu and Kashmir after a deadly terror attack on a Shia mosque in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad. The attack killed 50 people and left about 170 others seriously injured. The incident occurred on Friday and shocked Pakistan. On Saturday, Shia communities in India strongly condemned the violence and held rallies to express anger and grief.
In the Hanjiwera area of Baramulla district, huge rallies were organised. Women and men gathered in large numbers on the Srinagar Baramulla national highway. They raised slogans against terrorism and condemned the attack on innocent Muslims. The protesters expressed solidarity with the victims of the Islamabad mosque attack. Meanwhile, videos of the protests began circulating widely on social media, drawing attention to the public response.
The terror attack took place at the Khadija Tul Kubra Mosque in the Tarlai Kalan area of southeast Islamabad. A suicide bomber attempted to enter the mosque as worshippers were leaving after Friday prayers. However, security personnel stopped him at the entrance. Then the attacker detonated the explosive device, causing a powerful blast. The explosion left the mosque premises covered in blood. It also damaged the walls and roof due to its intensity.
Soon after the blast, authorities rushed the injured to nearby PIMS and Polyclinic hospitals. Doctors treated a large number of victims, many of whom suffered serious injuries. Officials said the death toll could rise further because several injured people remain in critical condition. Therefore, rescue and medical efforts continued as families searched for information about their loved ones.
Later, the Islamic State terrorist organisation officially claimed responsibility for the attack. In its statement, the group said it targeted the minority Shia community. The claim further increased fears and anger among Shia groups across the region. Meanwhile, the international community also reacted to the incident.
United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed deep outrage over the attack. He stated that attacks on places of worship are inhumane and will not be tolerated under any circumstances. His response highlighted global concern over rising attacks on religious sites. The Srinagar rallies and protests in Baramulla reflected this wider condemnation and the demand for justice.
