Hyderabad: The BJP candidate suicide in Maktal has triggered sharp political reactions, with Rajya Sabha MP Laxman demanding legal action against those responsible. He raised the issue in the Upper House, calling the incident disturbing and accusing the ruling Congress in Telangana of allowing atrocities that undermine democracy.
The incident relates to the death of Erukala Mahadevappa, a BJP candidate from Ward 6 of Maktal Municipality in Narayanpet district. His suicide has caused a stir in political circles. MP Laxman referred to the case in the Rajya Sabha and said such incidents were shocking, especially as they occurred in Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s home district of Mahabubnagar.
Meanwhile, MP Laxman quoted the circumstances surrounding the BJP candidate suicide. He said, “I am sure to win.. ST candidate Erukala Mahadevappa committed suicide after clearly telling his wife that the ruling party would harass me even after winning,”. He presented this statement while highlighting what he described as continued pressure on the candidate.
He further said that he had brought the brutal incident to the notice of the government in the House. Therefore, he demanded that legal action be taken against those responsible for the BJP candidate suicide. He stressed that accountability was necessary and said the matter could not be ignored.
Later, MP Laxman also targeted national Congress leaders over the issue. He said Rahul Gandhi, who is roaming the country holding the Constitution book, should answer on this matter. He expressed anger and said it was highly objectionable that the Congress party, which is in power in Telangana, was acting in a manner that mocked democracy.
The BJP candidate suicide has therefore intensified political tensions. The issue continues to echo in Parliament, with the BJP seeking action and answers. Meanwhile, the controversy has placed the Congress government in Telangana under renewed criticism over the allegations raised in the House.
