Borah became a BJP member during a function held at the Assam BJP headquarters ‘Vajpayee Bhawan’. The development marks a key political shift in the state. Along with him, former Congress worker Sanju Bora also joined the saffron party at the same event.

The move comes days after Borah resigned from the Congress on February 16. However, the Congress high command did not accept his resignation. Meanwhile, senior leaders rushed to his residence to persuade him. Rahul Gandhi also spoke to him during this period.

Borah had asked for time to reconsider his decision. However, the situation changed the next day. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Borah’s residence. Then, Sarma publicly announced that Borah would join the BJP on February 22. As announced, Borah formally entered the ruling party on Sunday.

The induction ceremony took place at ‘Vajpayee Bhawan’, the Assam BJP headquarters. Dilip Saikia was present during the event. Meanwhile, the BJP welcomed both Borah and Sanju Bora into its fold.

The development highlights fresh political churn in Assam. Borah had led the state Congress unit before stepping down. His exit and subsequent entry into the BJP follow a brief but intense phase of discussions and political outreach.

With Borah’s formal induction, the BJP has added another senior leader to its ranks in Assam. Further political reactions are awaited.
