Tahawwur Rana Citizenship Revocation Process Begins
Tahawwur Rana Citizenship Revocation | Hyderabad, Feb. 24: Tahawwur Rana, an accused in the 26 11 Mumbai terror attacks case, is likely to face another setback.
The Canadian government has begun the process to revoke his citizenship. This development comes just ahead of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s proposed visit to India on February 26.
The decision to start the Tahawwur Rana citizenship revocation process has drawn attention. Notably, it comes at a time when Canada is looking to reset ties with India.
Relations between the two countries had weakened during the tenure of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Now, Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to visit India in an effort to rebuild bilateral relations.
Therefore, Canada’s move before this visit is being seen as significant.
Tahawwur Rana Citizenship Revocation Linked to Fraud Allegations
Tahawwur Rana was born in Pakistan and is currently lodged in Tihar Jail. He is facing trial in connection with the Mumbai terror attacks, which were carried out under the leadership of Lashkar e Taiba.
However, reports suggest that the citizenship cancellation is not directly linked to terrorism charges.
According to Canada’s immigration department, IRCC, the action is based on allegations that Rana submitted false information while applying for Canadian citizenship in 2001.
In his application, he reportedly claimed that he had lived in Canada for four years and had spent only six days outside the country during that period.
However, an investigation by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police found that he had spent most of that time in Chicago in the United States.
It was also found that he owned property and operated businesses there, including an immigration consultancy and a grocery store. Canadian authorities reportedly treated this as serious and deliberate misrepresentation.
Tahawwur Rana Extradited to India Last Year
Meanwhile, Rana was extradited to India by the United States last year. India had pursued a long legal battle seeking his extradition.
However, Rana challenged the move in several federal courts, including a US court in San Francisco. He also approached the US Supreme Court by filing a writ petition. Nevertheless, he did not get relief in any of these courts. After exhausting all legal options, US authorities handed him over to India.
Subsequently, officials of the National Investigation Agency brought him to India and began questioning him in the 26 11 Mumbai terror attacks case.
