Ankara, July 8: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday declared that, in his view, the ceasefire with Iran was “over” following fresh US airstrikes on more than 80 targets that Washington said were linked to Iranian military capabilities. The claims have not been independently verified.
Speaking to reporters at the NATO Summit, Trump said he no longer believed negotiations with Iran were worthwhile. He accused Tehran of violating the ceasefire and repeated his opposition to Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.
Trump also made several allegations against the Iranian leadership, including claims about its treatment of protesters. Those claims have not been independently verified in the statements released with the operation.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), American forces struck more than 80 targets using precision guided munitions. The military said the operation targeted air defence systems, command and control infrastructure, coastal radar sites, anti ship missile capabilities, and dozens of boats operated by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
CENTCOM said the strikes were launched after alleged Iranian attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. It described the reported attacks as a violation of the ceasefire and a threat to freedom of navigation.
The US military added that it remains prepared to respond if the ceasefire agreement is violated. Iranian authorities had not publicly responded to the latest US statements at the time of publication.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes, carrying a significant share of global oil shipments. Any escalation in the region could have major implications for international shipping and energy markets.
