In a communication, the MJA raised grave objections and serious concerns over the project and stated that civil society activists, environmentalists, human rights organisations and local residents have sought that the project’s inauguration be stopped and a comprehensive review be taken up through democratic consultations.
On Thursday, Musi Jan Andolan, which has been in the forefront in opposing the Congress government’s proposed Gandhi Sarovar project by acquiring land from the residential colonies along the Musi riverbed, released a copy of the letter to the media.
MJA stated that among the concerns cited was the acquisition of 10.34 acres of land in Bandlaguda Jagir Village, Gandipet Mandal, Rangareddy District, which it said directly impacts residents of Madhu Park Ridge Apartments. The letter stated that residents have unanimously opposed the move, saying it threatens their homes. The project also drew criticism from Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson, Tushar Gandhi, who stated on X (Twitter), MJA pointed out.
The MJA group members urged Natarajan to convey what they described as on-ground discontent to theState government and central INC leadership, seeking to ensure the Gandhi Sarovar Project is not inaugurated and that the Musi Riverfront Development Project undergoes a thorough, participatory review.
