- Student groups demand scholarships, fee dues, budget hike
- Police detain protesters as scuffle erupts near Assembly
Hyderabad, March 25: Student organisations staged a major protest near the Telangana Assembly on Wednesday. The agitation, led by SFI and AISF, called for a ‘Chalo Assembly’ programme. The protest focused on pending fee reimbursement dues and scholarships.
However, tensions rose when student activists tried to move towards the Assembly, which was in session. Police intervened and stopped them. Soon after, a scuffle broke out between the protesters and the police. Authorities then detained several students and shifted them to different police stations across the city.
Meanwhile, the SFI Telangana unit placed several demands before the government. It urged officials to release pending scholarships and fee reimbursement dues without delay. The organisation also asked for a 20 percent increase in the education sector budget.
SFI state general secretary T Nagaraju said welfare residential schools and colleges operating in rented buildings need permanent campuses. He also opposed the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020. He demanded that the government withdraw the policy and pass a resolution to stop its rollout in the state.
In addition, the protesters raised concerns about vacancies in state universities. They called for immediate recruitment of professors, assistant professors, and non-teaching staff. They also demanded the release of Rs.218 crore in pending dues under the best available scheme and clearance of hostel bills.
Further, students urged the government to establish conventional universities in Khammam and Adilabad district headquarters. At the same time, AISF activists held a parallel protest. They demanded a 30 percent increase in the education budget.
The protest highlighted growing student concerns over delays in financial support and infrastructure gaps in the education sector.
