Women’s Participation Imperative Says MANUU VC

Hyderabad, March 11: Women’s participation in political and socio cultural spaces is essential for meaningful social change, said Prof. Syed Ainul Hasan, Vice Chancellor of Maulana Azad National Urdu University. He made the remarks while delivering the presidential address at a symposium titled “Women Writing in India: Contemporary Perspectives and New Aesthetics”.

The Department of English at Maulana Azad National Urdu University organized the symposium in collaboration with Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi. The event was held on the occasion of International Women’s Day. Scholars, writers, and academics attended the programme and discussed issues related to women’s writing and representation.

During his address, Prof. Syed Ainul Hasan stressed the importance of women’s participation in different spheres of public life. He said, “Women’s active participation in socio-cultural and political spheres is significant for bringing meaningful change to their lives”. He also noted that broader participation can help create more inclusive social and cultural spaces.

Meanwhile, the symposium brought together speakers who reflected on the role of women’s voices in literature and society. The Chief Guest, Dr Gogu Shyamala, a noted writer and researcher known for her work on marginalized voices and lived experiences, spoke about the transformative power of women’s writing. She discussed how literary expression can highlight social realities and bring attention to voices that are often overlooked.

Later, the Guest of Honour, Mrs. Arshia Hasan, President of MANUU Anjuman e Khawateen, addressed the gathering. She spoke about the need to recognise women’s creative voices in academic and cultural spaces. She also stressed the importance of encouraging discussions on gender, representation, and cultural expression within universities and research platforms.

Prof. Ishtiaque Ahmed, Registrar of the university, also addressed the event. He appreciated the Department of English for organising a national level academic programme focused on women’s literary contributions. He said such events help expand discussions on literature, gender, and society.

Earlier, Prof. Nagendra Kottacheruvu, Director and Head of the Department of English, delivered the welcome address. He highlighted the growing importance of women’s writing in contemporary literary discussions and emphasised the relevance of such dialogues in academic spaces.

In her introductory remarks, Dr. Geeta, Convener of the symposium and Associate Professor, explained the objectives and themes of the programme. She noted that the symposium aimed to examine women’s narratives emerging from diverse linguistic, regional, and social contexts.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Akram Khan. Research scholar Afshan Muskan hosted the programme and coordinated the proceedings.
