Dhaka/Hyderabad, May 2: Ministry of Foreign Affairs Bangladesh has summoned India’s acting High Commissioner Pawan Badhe and lodged a formal protest over remarks made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, according to media reports.
Diplomatic Protest Lodged
The meeting was held with Director General (South Asia) Ishrat Jahan, who conveyed Dhaka’s concerns to the Indian diplomat.
- Bangladesh termed the remarks as “disparaging”
- Said they undermine the spirit of friendly bilateral relations
- Urged restraint in addressing sensitive cross-border issues
Controversial Remarks
The controversy stems from a social media post by Sarma, where he stated that:
- 20 foreign nationals were apprehended in Assam
- They were “pushed back” to Bangladesh
Bangladesh objected to the tone and content of the statement.
Strained Bilateral Relations
Relations between India and Bangladesh have seen fluctuations in recent years:
- Tensions increased after political changes in Bangladesh in 2024
- The interim government led by Muhammad Yunus marked a shift
- Later, ties are being recalibrated following the rise of Tarique Rahman after parliamentary elections
Focus On Diplomatic Sensitivity
Officials stressed that public statements by political leaders can impact diplomatic relations and should be handled carefully.
Both countries are currently working toward stabilising ties, making such incidents particularly sensitive.
