Supreme Court hears transgender rights bill challenge over medical clause
The bill requires transgender persons to undergo medical treatment to obtain official gender identity certification. However, petitioners argue that this condition violates fundamental rights.
They said the rule undermines personal autonomy. Moreover, they argued that self identification should not depend on medical procedures.
A bench led by Chief Justice Justice Surya Kant is hearing the matter. In addition, the court has formed a three judge bench for detailed examination.
The court said it will review the legal and constitutional aspects. Meanwhile, it has not passed any interim order yet.
The case raises key questions on gender identity rights. Therefore, the outcome may impact future policy and legal standards.
