Hyderabad: PDS reforms Telangana are set to introduce nutritious jowar along with rice for ration card holders across the state. The government has begun groundwork to implement this major shift in the public distribution system.
Under the new PDS reforms Telangana plan, authorities will supply sorghum through ration shops. The state will use stocks procured by Telangana State MARKFED. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka directed officials to ensure smooth distribution.
PDS Reforms Telangana Aim To Boost Nutrition And Farmer Support
Moreover, the government plans to include jowar in meals served at welfare hostels and gurukul institutions. Therefore, students will receive more nutritious food as part of daily diets. Officials believe that increasing millet consumption can reduce nutritional deficiencies among the public.
In addition, the policy aligns with national efforts to promote millets as healthy alternatives. The move also supports sustainable agriculture and dietary diversity.
Meanwhile, the government has taken a key decision to protect farmers’ interests. It will procure jowar and maize at support prices due to falling market rates. Agriculture Minister Thummala Nageshwar Rao confirmed that the state will fund procurement independently.
Furthermore, procurement centers will be set up across Telangana during the Rabi 2026 season. This step ensures that farmers receive fair prices for their produce. As a result, both producers and consumers stand to benefit.
The initiative reflects a dual focus on nutrition and agriculture. On one hand, it strengthens food security. On the other, it boosts farmer income through assured procurement.
Overall, PDS reforms Telangana mark a significant policy shift. The rollout is expected soon, bringing changes to both ration distribution and rural livelihoods.
