Hyderabad, May 10: Karimnagar police have traced the suspects involved in the daylight robbery at a PMJ jewellery showroom to West Bengal in a major breakthrough in the investigation.
The robbery took place on May 3 and shocked residents after armed assailants opened fire inside the jewellery store before escaping with gold ornaments.
According to police officials, a six member gang from West Bengal, Bihar, and Rajasthan allegedly carried out the robbery. Investigators suspect the same gang may also be linked to several similar crimes reported in northern, northeastern, and central parts of India.
Police said the accused carefully planned the operation well in advance. The gang reportedly stayed in Peddapalli while pretending to be mechanics to avoid suspicion.
Investigators revealed that the suspects travelled mainly through public transport and moved across Jagtial, Siddipet, and Karimnagar for nearly a month before executing the robbery.
After the crime, the gang allegedly destroyed their mobile phones to prevent police from tracking their movements through GPS data.
Police intensify hunt for remaining gang members
Police teams have now launched an extensive search operation in Bihar and Rajasthan to arrest the remaining suspects involved in the robbery.
Officials believe another accomplice may have helped the gang by arranging a heavy vehicle to transport both the accused and the stolen jewellery after the crime.
During the investigation, police recovered a motorcycle suspected to have been used by the gang near Dharmapuri Ghat. However, another white coloured bike allegedly used during the robbery is still missing.
Investigators indicated that the case was nearing a major breakthrough, though police have not yet issued an official statement regarding arrests.
On the day of the incident, one accused reportedly entered the PMJ jewellery showroom pretending to be a customer and asked employees to show him a gold chain.
A few moments later, four more men entered the store and allegedly attacked the staff members.
When the security guard rushed inside, two of the accused reportedly pulled out firearms and opened fire to create panic before escaping with nearly one kilogram of jewellery from the display counters.
At least four employees sustained injuries during the firing incident and were shifted to a hospital for treatment.
The armed robbery triggered panic in Karimnagar and led to heightened security checks across Telangana following the incident.
