Hyderabad, May 14 (Maxim News) : The issue relating to renewal of Working Journalists’ Accreditation Cards came up before the Telangana High Court vacation bench on Thursday after Petitioner Telangana Urdu Working Journalists Federation said that the extension process remained pending despite assurances given to the court.
The dispute arose from G.O. No. 252, which was challenged before the Telangana High Court in February 2026.
During the hearing held on April 30, the High Court directed the respondents to file their counter affidavit before June 16, 2026.
At the same hearing, the Additional Special Advocate General reportedly assured the court that accreditation cards for working journalists would be extended till June 16.
Expedited Petition Filed In High Court
In response to the delay, advocate Barkat Ali Khan filed an expedited petition seeking urgent intervention from the court.
The petition argued that non extension of accreditation cards caused serious hardship to working journalists across the State.
The matter was mentioned before the Telangana High Court vacation court on May 14. After hearing preliminary submissions, the court posted the matter for further hearing on May 21, 2026.
During the hearing, counsel appearing for the Telangana Urdu Working Journalists Federation argued that denial and delay in extention of accreditation cards violated the Fundamental Rights guaranteed under the Constitution of India.
The petitioner’s counsel stated that the issue directly affected freedom of speech, freedom of expression and freedom of the press.
Contempt Plea Likely After Court Vacation
Speaking to the media, the petitioner’s counsel stated that contempt proceedings may be initiated after the court vacation if the earlier assurance given before the High Court is not implemented.
Journalist bodies have been demanding immediate extension of accreditation cards, stating that the cards are essential for access to official events, government offices and professional assignments week. (Maxim News)
