Hyderabad, May 17: In a rare recognition, the University of Agricultural Sciences Bengaluru has conferred an Honorary Doctorate on Hyderabad based agripreneur Dr GVK Naidu, Founder and Managing Director of Sam Agritech, during its 60th Convocation Ceremony.
The honour was presented by Karnataka Governor and University Chancellor Thaawarchand Gehlot at the convocation held in Bengaluru.
The University of Agricultural Sciences Bengaluru is one of India’s oldest and premier agricultural universities. The institution rarely awards honorary doctorates to its own alumni, making the recognition significant.
Dr GVK Naidu is a former student of the university. The award recognised his contribution to India’s fresh produce export sector and his efforts in creating globally competitive agricultural business models.
Responding to the honour, Dr Naidu said the recognition belonged to farmers, employees and partners who supported the journey of Sam Agritech over the years.
Sam Agritech Expanded India’s Fresh Produce Exports
Founded in 1996, Sam Agritech has emerged as one of India’s leading exporters of fresh and value added agricultural produce. The company played a major role in developing new export categories from India, including fresh pomegranate arils, fresh cut coconut chunks, fresh figs, dried arils and ready to eat fruit products.
The company recently expanded into high value crop segments including Hass avocado cultivation, blueberry projects and almond processing to meet growing international demand.
Sam Agritech operates an integrated farm to market ecosystem across South India. Its operations include nurseries, captive farms, high care processing units and international marketing networks.
Industry experts said the company strengthened India’s horticulture exports by setting up multi location processing facilities near cultivation zones. This helped improve freshness, food safety and supply chain efficiency.
The company follows international quality and food safety standards including HACCP, ISO, Global GAP, BRC, US FDA, SMETA and Fair Trade certifications.
Sam Agritech is also recognised for its social impact initiatives. More than 90 percent of the workforce in its rural processing units comprises women employees.
Industry observers described the honour as recognition of the increasing importance of innovation, value addition and export driven agriculture in India’s agri sector.
