Hyderabad, May 22 (Maxim News): Telangana Rakshana Sena president Kalvakuntla Kavitha staged a protest near the Secretariat on Friday demanding immediate procurement of paddy, maize, and sunflower crops from farmers across the state.
Police later detained Kavitha along with several party leaders and activists as the protest intensified with slogans against the Congress government.
Kavitha accused the state government of completely neglecting farmers despite growing distress at procurement centres. She alleged that farmers were suffering due to delays in paddy procurement and illegal deductions in grain weighing. According to her, several farmers were facing severe financial pressure while waiting for their produce to be purchased.
The protestors poured paddy on the road near the Secretariat and demanded that the government stop “tarugu” deductions and ensure fair prices to farmers without delay. Telangana Rakshana Sena workers raised slogans against Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and accused the administration of failing to protect farmers’ interests.
Kavitha Targets Government Over Farmer Issues
Addressing the media during the protest, Kavitha said the government had failed to conduct a proper review of the agriculture department even after two and a half years in office. She alleged that district collectors were registering Grade A paddy as lower-grade produce to avoid paying the bonus promised for fine rice varieties.
She also criticised the state over fertilizer shortages and said farmers were struggling to understand newly introduced digital applications linked to procurement and agricultural services. Kavitha demanded that the government simplify the system and ensure farmers do not suffer due to technical complications.
Kavitha said the deaths of farmers near procurement centres were deeply painful and blamed the government’s negligence for the crisis. She stated that the protest was organised to force the government to respond to the plight of farmers.
Police personnel intervened after the protest gathered momentum near the Secretariat premises. Kavitha and several Telangana Rakshana Sena activists were taken into preventive custody and shifted from the protest site.
The protest gained political significance as it comes shortly after Kavitha announced the formation of the Telangana Rakshana Sena following her suspension from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi. Since launching her new political outfit, she has been actively raising public issues and organising protests across the state.
Political observers believe Kavitha is trying to strengthen her independent political identity by focusing on farmer concerns, procurement delays, and welfare-related issues ahead of future political developments in Telangana. (Maxim News)
