Hyderabad, May 22: Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) produced a commanding performance to defeat Royal Challengers Bengaluru by 55 runs in a high-scoring IPL clash in Hyderabad on Friday night. However, despite the defeat, RCB successfully secured a top-two finish in the points table thanks to their superior net run-rate.
In a dramatic conclusion to the league stage, both teams walked away with mixed emotions. SRH posted a mammoth total of 255 runs after a batting masterclass, but their hopes of climbing into the top two depended on restricting Bengaluru below 166 runs — a target RCB eventually crossed comfortably.
The Hyderabad innings was powered by explosive half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan, who dismantled the RCB bowling attack with aggressive strokeplay throughout the innings.
Chasing a daunting 256-run target, RCB never seriously threatened to win the match but remained focused on the net run-rate equation. Captain Rajat Patidar led from the front with a valuable 56-run knock, while Krunal Pandya remained unbeaten on 41 to ensure Bengaluru crossed the all-important qualification mark.
The result left the top three teams level on 18 points, with Gujarat Titans positioned between RCB and SRH on the basis of net run-rate. Ultimately, the fine margins in net run-rate determined the top-two standings and playoff paths.
SRH’s net run-rate had suffered major damage earlier in the tournament after being bowled out for just 86 against Gujarat Titans, and that defeat proved decisive despite Friday’s emphatic victory.
RCB received brisk starts from Devdutt Padikkal and Rajat Patidar during the chase, helping the side stay ahead of the required qualification equation. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli had a disappointing outing, dismissed for 15 runs off 11 deliveries after mistiming a slower ball.
For SRH, Eshan Malinga once again delivered with the ball, claiming crucial wickets including that of Devdutt Padikkal. Notably, SRH continue to maintain a perfect win record whenever Malinga picks up two or more wickets in a match.
While the victory boosted SRH’s confidence heading into the playoffs, their inability to stop RCB from crossing 166 runs meant Hyderabad had to settle for third place and an Eliminator berth instead of a direct Qualifier 1 appearance.
