Hyderabad: The Government of India has advised citizens to avoid non essential travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan following the outbreak of Ebola disease in the affected regions.
The advisory was issued after the World Health Organization declared the situation a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Indian citizens currently living in or travelling to these countries were urged to strictly follow public health guidelines issued by local authorities and remain alert.
According to the Union Health Ministry, the advisory was issued in view of the evolving Ebola situation in Central and East Africa and based on recommendations made by the World Health Organization.
The ministry clarified that India has not reported any case of Ebola disease linked to the Bundibugyo virus strain so far.
WHO And Africa CDC Raise Global Health Alert
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention officially declared the ongoing outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain Ebola Virus Disease in Congo and Uganda as a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security.
The WHO International Health Regulations Emergency Committee also issued temporary recommendations on May 22 to strengthen disease surveillance at international entry points. Countries were advised to identify travellers arriving with unexplained fever from areas affected by the Ebola outbreak.
The WHO also discouraged travel to regions where Bundibugyo virus transmission has been officially detected.
Health authorities stated that neighbouring countries, including South Sudan, face a high risk of disease transmission because of cross border movement and regional connectivity.
Ebola disease is a severe viral haemorrhagic fever caused by infection with the Ebola virus. The current outbreak involves the Bundibugyo virus strain, which has a high mortality rate.
Medical experts said no approved vaccine or specific treatment is currently available for Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo strain.
The Indian government advised citizens travelling abroad to remain cautious, maintain hygiene, avoid crowded areas in affected regions, and immediately seek medical attention if symptoms such as fever, weakness, vomiting, or bleeding develop.
Officials are also closely monitoring the global situation to prevent any possible health risk to India.
