Hyderabad, May 27: Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Wednesday inaugurated 60 new electric buses at the TGSRTC Kukatpally depot as part of the State government’s Green Challenge initiative.
The new buses were flagged off in the presence of MLA Madhavaram Krishna Rao, TGSRTC Managing Director Y. Nagi Reddy and Medchal district collector Manu Choudhary.
Speaking at the event, Ponnam Prabhakar said the Telangana government is expanding electric public transport services to reduce pollution and improve air quality in Hyderabad.
He stated that the government aims to prevent Hyderabad from turning into another Delhi in terms of pollution levels and environmental concerns.
Telangana expanding electric public transport
The minister said around 540 electric buses are currently operating in Hyderabad city, while nearly 1,000 electric buses are being run across Telangana.
He explained that the government is focusing on eco friendly transport systems as part of its larger plan to promote green mobility and reduce carbon emissions.
Officials said the induction of new electric buses would improve passenger services and strengthen sustainable public transportation in the city.
RTC union elections and employee welfare
During the programme, the minister also announced that recognition elections for RTC workers’ unions would be conducted soon.
He said discussions regarding RTC merger issues would begin with the elected unions after the recognition process is completed.
Ponnam Prabhakar further assured implementation of the Pay Revision Commission (PRC) for RTC employees and reiterated the government’s commitment towards the welfare of transport workers.
He added that officials would interact with RTC employees every second Tuesday to address their grievances, workplace issues and service related concerns.
The minister said the government is working to modernize the transport sector while also protecting the interests of RTC staff and improving passenger facilities.
