Sultan Bazar Police Arrest Driver For Rs 5.5 Lakh Theft, Recover Most Of Stolen Cash

Hyderabad, July 13: Sultan Bazar Police of the Khairatabad Zone arrested a former driver for allegedly stealing Rs 5.50 lakh from his employer’s car in Hyderabad and recovered Rs 5,04,900 in cash along with other stolen property. The accused, who has a criminal history, was apprehended at Shadnagar Bus Stand following a technical investigation.

According to police, the accused has been identified as Kuthadi Hari Kumar, 33, a native of Chowdoor village in Nawabpet mandal of Mahabubnagar district. A case was registered under Crime No. 224/2026 under Section 306 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and an investigation was launched.

Police said the complainant, businessman Dayaram Prajapat, had employed Hari Kumar as his driver. On July 9, 2026, the complainant parked his vehicle at Bank Street, Koti, and went shopping. The accused allegedly retained the vehicle keys, opened the car and stole a backpack containing Rs 5.50 lakh in cash before fleeing to Kurnool.

Investigators said the accused allegedly committed the theft due to financial difficulties and resentment towards his employer over what he believed was inadequate compensation.

Acting on credible intelligence and technical evidence, Sultan Bazar Police tracked the accused and arrested him at Shadnagar Bus Stand. During interrogation, he confessed to the offence, following which police recovered:

Rs 5,04,900 in cash
Two mobile phones allegedly purchased using the stolen money
One mobile phone belonging to the accused
The Scorpio vehicle key

Police said efforts are continuing to recover the remaining amount and complete the investigation.

Police revealed that Hari Kumar has a history of criminal offences. His previous cases include:

A 2010 assault case registered at Nawabpet Police Station.A 2015 murder and theft case registered at Wanaparthy Police Station, in which he was initially sentenced to life imprisonment. The sentence was later modified by the High Court to two years of rigorous imprisonment. A 2024 case registered at Shadnagar Police Station for allegedly escaping from judicial custody while on furlough.

Officials said the accused is a habitual offender with multiple criminal antecedents.

The operation was carried out by Detective Inspector P. Dharma Rao with the assistance of Sub Inspector B. Sainath, Police Constables L. Chandan Singh and C. Sandeep of Sultan Bazar Police Station. The team worked under the supervision of Station House Officer G. Naresh and Assistant Commissioner of Police M. Mattaiah, Sultan Bazar Division. Senior police officials appreciated the team’s efforts and announced suitable rewards for successfully solving the case.
