Spurious Liquor Deaths: Five Maharashtra Police Officers Suspended
Mumbai, May 30: Five police officers, including the inspector of a police station in the Pune region, have been suspended following the deaths of 14 people who allegedly consumed spurious liquor in Maharashtra.
The action was taken by Vinay Kumar Choubey after an inquiry found lapses in monitoring illegal liquor activities in the area.
Police officials said the deaths were reported in areas falling under the jurisdictions of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad police units.
Spurious Liquor Deaths Trigger Protests
According to SachinHire, two accused have been arrested so far in connection with the case. Investigators are continuing efforts to identify others involved in the alleged illicit liquor network.
Officials said the suspended personnel failed to gather advance intelligence about the activities of illegal liquor operators in the region.
The incident has sparked anger among the victims’ families and local residents. Protesters have demanded strict action against those responsible for manufacturing and selling the liquor, as well as against officials accused of negligence.
Meanwhile, Rohit Pawar raised concerns over the handling of the case. He alleged that authorities were not treating the matter with the seriousness it deserved and called for a thorough investigation.
