Kolkata, May 31: Six persons have been arrested in connection with the alleged attack and harassment of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee during a visit to Sonarpur in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, police said on Sunday.
The incident occurred on Saturday when Banerjee visited the family of a deceased TMC worker in Sonarpur. During the visit, a group of protesters allegedly confronted him, raised slogans, hurled eggs and brick pieces, and attempted to physically attack him despite the presence of security personnel.
According to police, some protesters also tried to punch the MP while he was walking toward the residence of the deceased party worker. The incident sparked concerns over security arrangements provided to the senior TMC leader.
Six Arrested After Overnight Search
Following the incident, police launched an investigation and conducted overnight search operations in the area. Officials reviewed video footage from the scene and identified six suspects allegedly involved in the attack.
Police said all six arrested individuals are local residents and were present at the location during the incident. The accused are currently being interrogated to identify any additional persons involved in the attack.
Law enforcement agencies have intensified patrolling in the area to prevent further disturbances.
A police official stated that search operations continued through the night and that the investigation remains ongoing.
Banerjee Receives Medical Attention
After leaving Sonarpur under police protection, Abhishek Banerjee visited a private hospital along the EM Bypass in Kolkata. Doctors conducted a medical examination and advised that hospital admission was not required.
He was later taken to another private hospital near Minto Park, where doctors again determined that admission was unnecessary. Banerjee subsequently returned home for treatment and observation.
Mamata Banerjee Condemns Incident
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who accompanied Abhishek Banerjee at the hospital, strongly condemned the incident and criticized political opponents over the attack.
She said doctors had advised home-based treatment and that necessary medical support, including saline and oxygen, would be provided at home. The Chief Minister also stated that Banerjee could be shifted to Hyderabad for treatment if required.
The attack has triggered a political controversy in West Bengal, with the ruling TMC demanding strict action against those responsible. Police officials said further arrests could follow as the investigation progresses.
