New Delhi, June 3: The Centre on Tuesday removed two senior officials of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) amid controversy over the Class 12 On Screen Marking (OSM) system and ordered a high level inquiry into the procurement of digital evaluation services.
CBSE Chairman Rahul Singh and Secretary Himanshu Gupta were transferred. Senior bureaucrats Lokhande Prashant Sitaram and Varun Bhardwaj have been appointed as their replacements.
The Cabinet Secretariat announced the formation of a one member committee to investigate the procurement of services related to the On Screen Marking system used for Class 12 board examinations.
The committee will be headed by S. Radha Chauhan. It has been asked to submit its report to the Department of Personnel and Training within one month.
The controversy emerged after several Class 12 students alleged that scanned copies of answer sheets uploaded by the CBSE did not match their handwriting. The complaints raised concerns about possible answer sheet mismatches during the digital evaluation process.
The issue was also discussed by the Parliamentary Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports, chaired by Digvijaya Singh.
A 17 year old student from Jharkhand, Sarthak Sidhant, appeared before the panel and submitted a detailed report highlighting alleged irregularities in the tendering process used to select vendors for the OSM system.
CBSE officials, including Rahul Singh and senior Education Ministry representatives, attended the committee meeting and presented the board’s response to student concerns.
The board informed the panel that technical issues on its portal had been rectified and students would have until June 6 to apply for answer sheet revaluation.
Meanwhile, the CBSE claimed that its re evaluation portal came under cyberattacks. According to the board, malicious actors launched a denial of service attack that generated 1.5 million hits within two minutes and more than one lakh attempts at unauthorised file access.
The board stated that despite the attacks, the portal remained operational and supported over 8,000 concurrent users. More than 16,000 students had successfully submitted revaluation requests as of Tuesday afternoon.
CBSE said it has further improved the portal based on student feedback, including extending session time limits to make the process smoother and more accessible.
