Hyderabad, June 3: A couple from Siddipet was detained by police on Wednesday after allegedly attempting suicide near the Telangana Secretariat over an ongoing land dispute.
The couple reportedly poured petrol on themselves and threatened to end their lives, claiming they had not received justice in the matter.
According to preliminary information, the couple staged a protest near the Secretariat and attempted to take the extreme step to draw attention to their grievance.
Alert police personnel noticed their actions and intervened before the situation escalated. Officers reportedly snatched away a matchbox from the couple and prevented them from setting themselves on fire.
Police then poured water on the couple and brought the situation under control.
The couple was subsequently taken to a police station for questioning.
During the inquiry, they reportedly informed authorities that they were facing difficulties related to an unresolved agricultural land dispute and felt compelled to protest.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
Police are gathering further details, and an investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the protest and the land dispute.
