Fake Police Gang Busted in Hyderabad | Hyderabad, June 3 (Maxim News) : In a major breakthrough, the Jagadgirigutta Police and the Kukatpally Crime Control Station (CCS) team busted an interstate fake police gang involved in kidnapping, extortion, wrongful confinement, criminal intimidation, impersonation, and organized crime. Police arrested five accused persons and launched a search for two absconding suspects.
The gang allegedly kidnapped a Kukatpally businessman, posed as police officers, and extorted ₹5.26 lakh after falsely claiming that he was wanted in a criminal case in Haryana.
According to police, the incident occurred on May 18 near Shobodhaya Colony, opposite Lake Bar, in Jagadgirigutta. The victim, Kavuri Purnachandra Rao, a resident of Jayanagar in Kukatpally, lodged a complaint on May 20 after escaping from the accused.
Police said the victim was travelling towards Prashanth Nagar on his motorcycle when a car intercepted him. Three men got out of the vehicle and introduced themselves as police officers. They falsely informed him that a criminal case had been registered against him in Haryana and that he needed to accompany them for questioning.
Believing their claims, the victim entered the vehicle. The gang then confined him, seized his mobile phone, ATM card, and cash, and forced him to reveal banking passwords and financial credentials.
To make the deception more convincing, the accused arranged a fake video call with another person posing as a Haryana police officer. Investigators said the call was part of a well-planned strategy to intimidate the victim and extract money.
Fake Police Gang Used Uniforms, Weapons, and Fake IDs
The accused later took the victim to Suryapet, where they withdrew ₹1 lakh from his bank account through ATM transactions. Furthermore, they transferred another ₹1 lakh through PhonePe and siphoned additional funds using internet banking applications. In total, the gang extorted ₹5.26 lakh.
After collecting the money, the accused allegedly assaulted the victim, removed his SIM card, handed him a basic mobile phone, and abandoned him at an isolated location before fleeing.
Based on technical evidence, digital analysis, CCTV footage, and sustained investigation, police arrested Nagaraju Raghu Varma alias Karthikeya alias Vamshi alias Alluri Vijayaram alias Col. Karthikeya Singh, Yeswanth Singh alias Rahul, Sathyabhan Singh alias Thakur, and Thangellapalli Nagendra Varma. Police identified Pradeep Kumar Mishra and Sunil Kumar alias Fouzi as absconding accused and formed special teams to trace them.
During interrogation, investigators discovered that several accused became acquainted while serving prison sentences. After their release, they allegedly formed an organized criminal network and continued targeting businessmen and financially well-off individuals across multiple states.

Police said the gang maintained an elaborate collection of fake police equipment to impersonate law enforcement personnel. The accused used police uniforms, forged identity cards, rank badges, insignia, handcuffs, batons, name plates, police stamps, fake government documents, court seals, and fake vehicle number plates to gain the trust of victims.
Investigators also found that the gang relied on technical support networks for surveillance, victim identification, communication, and coordination of crimes across jurisdictions. Police suspect that more victims may have been targeted using similar methods.
Prime Accused Linked to 12 Similar Cases
The investigation revealed that the prime accused, Nagaraju Raghu Varma, is a habitual offender with involvement in at least 12 similar cases registered in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Jharkhand. Police had previously detained him twice under the Preventive Detention Act. He is also a rowdy-sheeter at Poduru Police Station.
Other arrested accused reportedly have criminal histories involving theft, property offences, dacoity, and cyber-related crimes registered in multiple police stations across Telangana and other states.
During the operation, police recovered several incriminating items, including mobile phones, laptops, an air pistol, a country-made 7.65 mm pistol, fake police uniforms, forged ID cards, handcuffs, batons, police shoes, fake government documents, seals, SIM cards, and vehicles used in the crimes.
The seized vehicles include a Tata Tiago car and Royal Enfield Himalayan motorcycles allegedly used during the commission of offences.
Police produced the arrested accused before a local court, which remanded them to judicial custody. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to arrest the absconding accused and identify additional victims connected to the gang’s activities.
Officials urged citizens to verify the identity of individuals claiming to be police officers and avoid sharing banking details, passwords, OTPs, or financial information with unknown persons. Police also advised the public to immediately report suspicious activity to law enforcement authorities.
The case was detected under the supervision of DCP Crimes Mutyam Reddy and Additional DCP Purushotham. ACP Quthbullapur Balagangi Reddy, ACP Crimes Nageshwar Rao, Inspector P. Narendra Reddy, CCS Inspector K. Ravi Kumar, and teams from Jagadgirigutta Police and Kukatpally CCS played a key role in cracking the case. (Maxim News)
