Hyderabad, June 8: Postgraduate resident doctors at Niloufer Hospital staged a flash protest on Monday after a second year PG doctor was allegedly assaulted by attendants of an infant while on duty in the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit (RICU).
Hospital authorities said they would lodge a formal complaint with the Nampally police against those involved in the incident.
According to doctors, the infant had shown signs of improvement and was shifted from the RICU to an isolation ward. The duty doctor reportedly examined the child and counselled the attendants on Sunday evening.
However, five attendants, including two men and three women, later entered the RICU after the child began crying excessively. Doctors said the child was experiencing only minimal distress, but the resident doctor decided to shift the infant back to the RICU as a precautionary measure.
The doctor also requested the attendants to leave the intensive care unit and allowed only the child’s mother to remain, in line with standard ICU protocols.
Members of the Osmania Junior Doctors Association stated that the decision was taken solely in the interest of patient safety and infection control. They said unrestricted movement inside intensive care units could increase infection risks and endanger critically ill patients.
Doctors alleged that instead of cooperating with medical staff, the attendants physically assaulted the resident doctor.
The medicos also expressed concern over the reported failure of the emergency communication system. They said doctors were unable to immediately alert the police through the Resident Medical Officer because the helpline was not functioning at the time.
The incident triggered protests by resident doctors, who demanded stronger security measures and better protection for healthcare workers while performing their duties.
Hospital authorities said appropriate legal action would be pursued and further details are awaited.
