No Petrol And Diesel Sales In Bulk for 90 Days In India

Hyderabad: The Central government has imposed temporary restrictions on the bulk purchase of petrol and diesel at retail fuel stations across the country. The new rules will remain in force for an initial period of 90 days and aim to prevent the diversion and resale of retail fuel.

Under the notification issued by the government, fuel station dealers cannot sell more than 200 litres of high speed diesel to a single customer or vehicle in a day. The order also prohibits the resale of diesel purchased from retail outlets.

The government has directed institutional and commercial consumers to meet their fuel requirements through dedicated consumer pumps or captive fuel facilities instead of retail outlets.

New Fuel Sale Curbs to Remain in Force for 90 Days

Officials said the decision seeks to ensure that fuel sold at retail pumps is used primarily by individual consumers. Large commercial and institutional buyers must now procure fuel through authorised channels.

The restrictions are expected to affect transport operators, contractors, industrial users and other bulk consumers who regularly purchase fuel from retail stations.

Oil marketing companies such as Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation are likely to face increased monitoring of retail fuel distribution following the directive.

Fuel Prices Continue to Rise

The move comes amid volatility in global energy markets due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Disruptions in shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz have pushed international crude oil prices higher.

Petrol prices in Delhi have increased by ₹4.75 per litre since May 15, while diesel prices have risen by ₹4.82 per litre during the same period.

Government officials noted that India maintained stable fuel prices for nearly 76 days despite global supply disruptions before allowing price revisions.

The latest restrictions are expected to tighten fuel distribution controls and curb the misuse of retail-priced petroleum products as global energy uncertainty continues.
