Kolkata/Hyderabad, June 18 (Maxim News): TMC chief and former West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has suffered a setback in the Calcutta High Court. The High Court has upheld the Speaker’s decision to recognize TMC rebel leader Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly. The court said that no change can be ordered in this matter at this time. Calcutta High Court Judge Justice Krishna Rao has taken a decision on this case to this extent. It is known that many TMC MLAs have rebelled against Mamata and the party.
64 MLAs rebelled and asked Bengal Speaker Rathindra Bose to recognize Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly on behalf of their party. As 64 out of 90 MLAs supported Ritabrata, the Speaker took the decision to recognize him as the Leader of Opposition. However, Mamata Banerjee approached the Calcutta High Court challenging the Speaker’s recognition of the rebel MLA as the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, instead of the MLA they had suggested. A bench headed by Justice Krishna Rao recently heard the matter. The court said that it cannot interfere with the decision of the Assembly Speaker and that Ritabrata cannot be replaced as the Leader of Opposition at this time.
It issued notices to the Speaker and the respondents to respond to this issue. It asked them to give their response on this issue. Responding to this, the respondents asked for three weeks to submit their affidavits. However, the court gave them two weeks. Also, the next hearing was adjourned to July 28. It made it clear that Ritabrata Banerjee will continue as the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly until then. (Maxim News)
