PM Modi Commissions 3 Indigenous Indian Navy Ships In Kolkata

Kolkata/Hyderabad, June 21 (Maxim News): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday commissioned three indigenously built Indian Navy platforms in Kolkata, marking a major boost to India’s maritime capability and defence self reliance.

The three platforms inducted into service are INS Dunagiri, an advanced stealth frigate, INS Sanshodhak, a large survey vessel, and INS Agray, an anti submarine warfare shallow water craft. The commissioning ceremony was held at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port in Kolkata.

Addressing the gathering, Modi said the induction of the three ships reflected India’s growing strength in indigenous defence manufacturing and underlined the strategic importance of maritime power for national security and economic influence.

The Prime Minister said India could no longer remain only a buyer in the defence sector and stressed that self reliance must define the country’s military strength. He said the three ships represented the skill of Indian engineers, shipbuilders, workers and industry, and stood as a symbol of New India’s growing confidence in domestic defence production.

INS Dunagiri is a Project 17A stealth frigate built for advanced maritime combat operations. INS Sanshodhak is designed for hydrographic surveys in coastal and deep sea waters and will support seabed mapping and maritime domain awareness. INS Agray is an anti submarine warfare shallow water craft designed to detect and neutralise underwater threats in coastal areas.

Together, the three platforms are expected to strengthen the Navy’s combat, surveillance and anti submarine warfare capabilities. The commissioning also highlights the growing role of indigenous shipbuilding in expanding the operational reach of the Indian Navy and reducing dependence on foreign defence systems.

Modi said the journey from the commissioning of INS Vikrant to the induction of the latest platforms reflected India’s steady progress towards maritime self reliance. He said strong sea power was closely linked to a country’s economic growth, strategic influence and security preparedness.

The three vessels were designed and built in India and form part of the government’s broader push to strengthen domestic defence production under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
