Dhaka/Internet/Hyderabad, June 21 (Maxim News): Thousands of members of Bangladesh’s Hindu community held protests in Dhaka and other places over the alleged desecration of an image of Lord Ram and the suspension of work on a proposed Ram statue project in Gaibandha district.
The demonstrations were organised after Hindu groups accused those opposing the construction of a large Lord Ram statue in Palashbari, Gaibandha, of insulting a religious image and threatening the temple project. Protesters gathered in Dhaka and raised slogans demanding immediate action against those responsible.
Reports from Bangladesh said the protest in the capital was held near the National Press Club and was attended by members of several Hindu organisations and community bodies. Protesters demanded the arrest of the accused and called on the government to ensure protection for minority religious institutions and projects.
Statue project in Gaibandha becomes flashpoint for protests
The controversy centres on a temple complex project in Palashbari, where a large statue of Lord Ram was being built as part of a broader religious development. Community leaders alleged that construction work was halted after threats and opposition from local groups. They also claimed that an image of Lord Ram was desecrated during protests earlier this month, triggering anger among Hindu organisations.
At the protest, community representatives called for the immediate arrest and punishment of those allegedly involved in the incident. Some groups also warned of further demonstrations if action was not taken within a set deadline. Speakers at the gatherings said the issue concerned both religious dignity and the safety of minority communities in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh media reports said similar protests were also held in other districts, with organisers urging authorities to protect religious rights and prevent communal tensions from escalating. The latest demonstrations have once again brought attention to concerns raised by Hindu groups over minority security and freedom of worship in Bangladesh.
