Re-Neet: Burqa, Kalawa Thread Controversy

Ajmer/Internet/Hyderabad, June 21 (Maxim News) The NEET UG 2026 re-examination for about 22 lakh students began on Sunday amid the tightest security arrangements in the history of national examinations. While the authorities were focused on preventing a repeat of the question paper leak controversy, last-minute controversies arose at several centers. From disputes over hijabs and turbans to a candidate arriving at a different exam center with an old admit card, some unexpected incidents took place today. This led to chaos at many places.

‘It’s not the exam…it’s the burqa that matters’

A woman candidate has alleged that the staff at the examination centre in Ajmer, Rajasthan, asked her to remove her burqa to allow her to enter. She, who hails from Bewar, said she had appeared in the exam on May 3 wearing this type of attire and questioned why objections were being raised now. “They can’t stop us when the NTA has given permission. If I have to write the exam and they don’t allow me in this attire, I won’t write the exam. The exam is not important to me. The burqa and identity are important to me,” she said.

Parents’ protest… Police enter the scene

Another controversy has come to light at an examination centre in Ahmedabad (Gujarat). According to local officials and parents, during security checks, some Muslim candidates first removed their hijabs, while some Hindu students cut their sacred knots. This action led to protests by parents there. Police said that the problem arose due to lack of proper awareness among some security personnel. Later, with the intervention of the police, Muslim candidates were allowed to keep their hijabs and Hindus were allowed to keep their knots. However, parents were already expressing their anger over the cutting of their children’s hand threads and demanded that the rules be implemented uniformly. (Maxim News)
