Kolkata, June 23: A rebel faction within the TMC on Monday announced senior MLA Arup Roy as its chairperson and declared disciplinary action against party national secretary Abhishek Banerjee, intensifying internal political tensions.
The announcement was made by rebel leader Ritabrata Banerjee after a meeting with legislators and party councillors aligned with the faction.
The group claimed that it represents the real Trinamool Congress and announced the creation of a parallel organisational structure.
Rebel TMC Faction Intensifies Internal Power Struggle
According to the rebel faction, the decision was taken to address what it described as a constitutional crisis within the party.
Ritabrata Banerjee stated that party rules require formation of a national executive every three years. He claimed that the committee formed in February 2022 completed its term without reorganisation.
The rebel camp said the internal challenge, which had earlier remained limited to legislative and parliamentary activities, has now expanded into the organisational structure.
Arup Roy attended the meeting where the decision was finalised.
The faction also announced the suspension of Abhishek Banerjee from its parallel structure. However, no official response from the recognised Trinamool Congress leadership was mentioned in the statement.
The development marks another phase in the internal political dispute and could lead to further developments within the party structure in West Bengal.
