Doha, June 23: A major explosion at Qatar’s Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas facility killed 13 people and injured 66 others, with Indian authorities confirming that 12 Indian nationals were among those who lost their lives.
The explosion occurred at the Barzan gas supply facility within Ras Laffan Industrial City during restart operations after an earlier shutdown. Qatari authorities described the incident as a technical accident and stated that no hostile action was involved.
Qatar LNG Plant Explosion Triggers Diplomatic Response
The Embassy of India in Doha expressed concern over the incident and said it was coordinating closely with Qatari authorities to support affected Indian nationals and their families. India also said efforts were underway to facilitate assistance and repatriation procedures.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed condolences over the deaths and assured government support to affected families.
The blast was powerful enough to trigger concern beyond the industrial zone. However, Qatar’s authorities stated that LNG export operations and broader logistics at Ras Laffan remain unaffected and there is no environmental threat linked to the accident.
