New York, July 8: A Punjab Police officer has reportedly been named among 37 Indian nationals wanted by the United States as part of an investigation into an alleged transnational criminal network. The case emerged during the FBI’s Operation Hardball.
According to US authorities, the investigation targets individuals allegedly linked to criminal syndicates operating from India. Among those named are alleged gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi and Bhagwan Puria.
US officials have accused Punjab Police officer Gurinderjeet Singh of allegedly extorting about 400,000 US dollars from the family of a victim in the United States in connection with a murder case.
Speaking at a media briefing in Los Angeles, First Assistant US Attorney Bill Essayli said the officer allegedly threatened the family with a murder case in India if they failed to pay the demanded amount.
The allegations form part of the investigation into the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria criminal syndicate. US authorities have filed charges against multiple accused as part of the probe.
Officials also indicated that they would pursue the extradition of the Punjab Police officer to face legal proceedings in the United States.
The allegations remain part of an ongoing investigation, and the legal process is yet to conclude.
