Hyderabad, July 11: Six people were murdered in Daivalaguda in Shabad police limits of Rangareddy district, sparking statewide shock and protests.
Relatives and villagers blockaded the Shabad Kandi road outside Shabad police station, saying police ignored earlier complaints against suspect Raj Kumar. They said police inaction allowed the killings. Family members had filed a complaint earlier, they added.
The FIR against Raj Kumar under the POCSO Act says he had stalked a minor girl for six months. He repeatedly forced meetings and pressured her to go out. The girl’s mother stopped sending her to college for safety. On an exam day the mother went with her daughter to the centre. After the exam, Raj Kumar tried to abduct the girl, the FIR states. He threatened to kill them, the FIR adds. Fear forced the mother to file a police complaint.
Locals told reporters Raj Kumar had earlier assaulted two men and made threats in another matter. They said police treated prior complaints lightly despite his record. Angered villagers demanded strict action and punishment for those who failed to act.
Police say Raj Kumar attacked the girl and her mother at about 11 pm. He stabbed them, then forced the girl into a car. Officers reported he drove three kilometres to the Daivalaguda tank bund, killed her and slit her throat. Later he returned home and attacked his wife with a knife. She ran out but he dragged her back and killed her. He then killed his two sleeping children. Police say he phoned his father, confessed and switched off his phone before fleeing.
Rangareddy Commissioner of Police Tarun Joshi said an FIR was registered on May 16 against Raj Kumar. He added the suspect later absconded and police searched for him. Joshi said Raj Kumar was granted bail earlier, received counselling several times and showed signs of mental instability.
He also had gambling habits, the CP said. Investigations into the murders of his wife and children continue. Seven police teams hunt the suspect, Joshi said.
