Defending champions Argentina booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinals after defeating 10 man Switzerland 3-1 after extra time in a thrilling quarterfinal on Saturday. A stunning long range strike from Julian Alvarez proved decisive as Lionel Scaloni’s side set up a blockbuster last four clash with England.
Argentina made a bright start and took the lead in the 10th minute when Alexis Mac Allister headed home a pinpoint cross from Lionel Messi.
Despite the early breakthrough, Switzerland responded strongly and created several chances. Their persistence paid off in the 67th minute when Dan Ndoye finished from close range to level the score and force Argentina onto the back foot.
Julian Alvarez Sends Argentina Into FIFA World Cup 2026 Semifinals
The match took a dramatic turn in the 72nd minute when Switzerland were reduced to 10 men after Breel Embolo was sent off. Initially, referee Joao Pinheiro booked Argentina’s Leandro Paredes, but after a VAR review under the tournament’s new mistaken identity rule, the decision was overturned. Embolo was instead shown a second yellow card for simulation and dismissed.
Argentina pushed for a winner in regulation time. Lisandro Martinez came close with an acrobatic effort in the closing moments, while Messi nearly scored after rounding the goalkeeper. Although the assistant referee raised the offside flag, replays suggested the goal might have stood.
With the match heading towards penalties, Julian Alvarez produced the moment of brilliance in the 112th minute. The forward unleashed a powerful 25 yard strike that flew into the top corner, giving Argentina a priceless lead.
As Switzerland committed players forward in search of an equaliser, Lautaro Martinez sealed the victory deep into extra time. After a swift counterattack led by Thiago Almada, Lautaro calmly slotted home Argentina’s third goal.
Argentina will now face England in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinal on Wednesday in Atlanta. The other semifinal will see Spain take on France.
The reigning champions are aiming to become only the third nation in history, after Italy and Brazil, to successfully defend a FIFA World Cup title.
