New Delhi, July 25: Social activist Sonam Wangchuk on Friday said he ended his 26-day hunger strike after receiving assurances from the Central government, stating that his decision was aimed at preventing violence against students participating in the ongoing protests.
Wangchuk said he did not end the fast as part of any political deal and denied allegations suggesting otherwise.
In a video posted on YouTube, Wangchuk said he agreed to end the hunger strike following discussions with the Centre.
He said the decision was taken to prevent any crackdown on students and to avoid violence during the protests.
According to Wangchuk, he also considered the well-being of students and referred to the violence reported in Ladakh on September 24, 2025, while deciding to call off the fast.
Rejecting claims that he had reached a political understanding with the government, Wangchuk said his priority was to ensure that students participating in the agitation did not become victims of violence or legal action.
He maintained that protecting the students was the primary reason behind ending his hunger strike.
Wangchuk also clarified that he did not demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan during discussions with the government.
However, he expressed confidence that the minister would resign from his post.
