Hyderabad, July 25: Members of the Muslim community across Telangana have intensified participation in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls amid concerns that eligible voters could be omitted during the revision process.
Community organisations, mosque committees and volunteers have launched awareness campaigns, particularly in Hyderabad’s Old City and other districts with a significant Muslim population, encouraging voters to complete the enumeration process and verify their electoral details.
According to community representatives, awareness drives are being conducted to ensure eligible voters submit the required forms and confirm their names on the electoral rolls.
Mosque committees and voluntary organisations have reportedly set up voter assistance counters outside several mosques and are using Friday congregational prayers to encourage voter registration and verification.
The initiatives are aimed at increasing awareness about the SIR process and ensuring that eligible voters complete the required formalities within the stipulated timeline.
According to estimates cited by community groups, Muslims constitute around 12.75 per cent of Telangana’s population and play an important electoral role in several Assembly constituencies across the State.
Apart from Hyderabad’s Old City, Muslim voters are considered influential in parts of Warangal, Nalgonda, Miryalaguda, Khammam, Karimnagar, Jagityal, Sangareddy, Nizamabad, Bhainsa, Adilabad, Rajendranagar, Maheshwaram, Serilingampally, Parigi and Tandur.
Political observbers note that while some constituencies have a dominant Muslim electorate, in several others the community’s votes are regarded as electorally significant during closely contested elections.
Community volunteers said the focus of the ongoing campaign is to ensure that eligible voters verify their details, submit necessary documents wherever required and avoid omission from the revised electoral rolls.
The Election Commission is carrying out the Special Intensive Revision across Telangana, with digitisation and verification of enumeration forms continuing ahead of the scheduled completion of the exercise.
