Hyderabad, July 25: India’s first indigenous hydrogen train has successfully covered more than 1,200 kilometres while saving over 3,200 litres of diesel, marking a major milestone in the country’s clean transportation efforts, the Ministry of Railways said on Saturday.
The Ministry said the 10 coach hydrogen train generates electricity onboard through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. It emits only water vapour, making it a zero tailpipe emission and smoke free mode of rail transport.
The train is equipped with two hydrogen powered driving cars that produce a combined 2,400 kW of power. It also uses lithium iron phosphate batteries and hydrogen cylinders. Green hydrogen is stored at pressures of up to 500 bar and dispensed at 350 bar, with a total storage capacity of around 3,000 kg.
According to the Ministry, the train features multiple safety systems that detect hydrogen leaks, heat, flames and smoke. Automatic shut off systems, continuous ventilation and compliance with international safety standards further enhance operational safety.
Following successful operations between Jind and Sonipat, Indian Railways will soon begin trial runs on the Delhi route.
Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said India has retained the intellectual property rights for the indigenous hydrogen train technology, creating opportunities for future exports.
He said hydrogen is emerging as an important fuel worldwide and added that Indian Railways has developed the complete 2,400 kW hydrogen propulsion system domestically. Vaishnaw said the project reflects the vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat while strengthening India’s position in sustainable and zero emission rail mobility.
