Hyderabad Police Register Case Against Meta Over Anti-Modi Content

Hyderabad, July 31: The Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have registered a case against Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, over the alleged circulation of objectionable and morphed content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the social media platforms.

The case was registered following a complaint alleging that several Facebook and Instagram posts shared during protests over the alleged NEET paper leak contained content that promoted misinformation and could affect public harmony.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the complaint was filed on July 29 by T. Saikiran Goud, a member of the BJP Telangana social media team and a resident of Nampally.

In his complaint, Goud alleged that while browsing social media, he came across reels and posts targeting Prime Minister Modi. He claimed the content included morphed videos, spread false information, incited hatred, and could undermine national unity.

The complainant submitted details of around 20 Facebook and Instagram URLs and requested the police to preserve the electronic evidence, identify those operating the accounts, and obtain account information from Meta as part of the investigation.

He also sought legal action against the platform for allegedly allowing the circulation of the disputed content.

Based on the complaint, ASI Hari Ram Kiran registered a case at the Cyber Crime Police Station under Sections 66C and 67 of the Information Technology Act, along with Sections 353(2) and 336(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The investigation is being conducted by Inspector P. Jayashankar.
