Hyderabad, August 5: A 20 year old courier delivery executive was arrested for allegedly using pepper spray on a customer before snatching her gold mangalsutra at Miyapur in Hyderabad. Police recovered the stolen gold chain and the parcel meant for delivery.
The accused, identified as Shaik Mahaboob Basha, is a native of Andhra Pradesh and was assigned to deliver Ayurvedic medicines to a 38 year old resident, B. Adhinarayana.
According to police, the incident occurred on July 31 when Basha arrived at the victim’s residence to deliver the parcel. He allegedly asked whether she was alone at home. After receiving a positive response, he sprayed pepper spray on her face, snatched her gold mangalsutra weighing about four tolas and fled from the spot.
The victim sustained injuries in the incident and later approached the Miyapur Police, who registered a case and launched an investigation.
Using CCTV footage, investigators traced the accused to his native village of Kanigiri in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh and arrested him.
Police said Basha has two previous criminal cases registered against him at Kanigiri Police Station. They recovered the stolen gold chain and the Ayurvedic medicines that he had failed to deliver.
Hyderabad Police have advised residents to verify the identity of courier and delivery personnel before opening their doors and to remain alert while receiving deliveries.
