Internet/Hyderabad, Aug 16: Former West Bengal Deputy Speaker and Trinamool Congress MLA Ashish Banerjee was found dead at a party office in Rampurhat, Birbhum district, on Sunday.
His body was found at the Trinamool Congress office located near his residence in the Hattalapara area.
A large number of party workers and local residents gathered at the spot after the incident came to light.
Police reached the location and began an investigation. According to preliminary information, Banerjee’s body was found hanging.
Police Send Body For Postmortem
Police have sent the body for postmortem to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.
Officials said the exact details would become clear after the postmortem examination and further investigation.
Ashish Banerjee was elected as a Trinamool Congress MLA from Rampurhat constituency five times.
He held important portfolios, including education and agriculture, during Mamata Banerjee’s tenure as Chief Minister.
He became Deputy Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in 2021.
Banerjee was regarded as a close associate of Mamata Banerjee from the early days of the Trinamool Congress.
He was defeated in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
