Srinagar, August 17: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti called herself a “dimaagi Naxal” after saying she supports Article 370 of the Constitution.
“I support Article 370. I’m a dimaagi Naxal,” Mufti posted on X on Sunday.
Her remark came in response to Union Minister Kiren Rijiju’s comments about people who could be described as “dimaagi Naxals.”
Mehbooba Mufti Backs Article 370
Rijiju said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had not described opposition leaders as “dimaagi Naxals.”
He said the term applied to people who support Maoists, reject the Constitution or support separatists and Article 370.
Rijiju also mentioned those who allegedly seek to separate the Northeast from the rest of India.
Mufti’s remarks came a day after Prime Minister Modi used the term during his Independence Day address.
Modi warned against what he described as ideological supporters of Naxalism. He urged citizens to identify and isolate such elements.
The Prime Minister said India had made progress against armed Naxalism. However, he alleged that its ideological supporters continued to seek opportunities to promote violence and anarchy.
The remarks have since triggered a political exchange between the BJP and Opposition parties.
