Patna, August 17: A stampede at Bihar’s Ashok Dham Temple in Lakhisarai killed at least seven devotees and injured more than eight others on Monday.
The incident occurred during the third Monday of Sawan. A large crowd had gathered for Jalabhishek at the temple.
According to the Lakhisarai District Magistrate, the crowd became heavy between 6:30 am and 7 am.
Fallen Pole Triggers Panic Among Devotees
The queue had extended towards Ashok Dham Halt, where two trains were reportedly stationed.
A sudden collapse of an electric pole triggered panic among devotees. A rumour that the fallen pole was electrically charged reportedly caused people to rush in different directions.
The resulting stampede left several devotees trapped and crushed in the crowd. Locals and fellow pilgrims immediately began rescue efforts.
Police and administrative officials reached the spot after receiving information. The injured were shifted to Sadar Hospital in Lakhisarai.
Authorities identified five of the deceased as Manmala Devi, Rinku Devi, Hemlata Devi, Lalita Devi and another victim. Three others are yet to be identified.
Authorities are monitoring the injured, and the casualty figure could rise.
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary expressed grief over the deaths. He directed officials to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured.
Ashok Dham Temple, also known as Shri Indradamneshwar Mahadev Temple, is a major religious site in Lakhisarai.
The temple attracts large crowds during Sawan, particularly on Mondays, when devotees gather for Jalabhishek.
