SEMICON India 2026: India’s Chip Moment

New Delhi, Sept. 15: India is rapidly expanding its semiconductor ecosystem, moving from electronics assembly and manufacturing towards domestic chip production and advanced semiconductor capabilities.

Electronics production has increased nearly seven times, rising from ₹1.9 lakh crore in 2014–15 to ₹13.11 lakh crore in 2025–26. The growth highlights the expansion of India’s electronics manufacturing base over the past decade.

India is also focusing on developing skilled semiconductor talent. More than 68,000 students have been trained through the Chips to Startup programme.

By April 2026, 75 institutions had taped out 211 chips, reflecting growing capabilities in semiconductor design and development.

The expansion is aimed at building an integrated semiconductor ecosystem covering chip design, manufacturing and related technologies. The initiative is expected to strengthen India’s capacity to produce the chips needed for its growing technology and electronics sectors.
