Karimnagar, Sept. 17: Farmers in Karimnagar are showing interest in farm ponds to store rainwater and support crop cultivation.
The ponds help farmers conserve rainwater that would otherwise flow away from agricultural fields.
Farmers often face water shortages when rains fail during crop cultivation. Crops can also face water stress after the harvest season.
To address these issues, the government has allowed farmers to construct farm ponds under the VBG Ramji scheme.
Farm Ponds Help Farmers Store Rainwater
Farmers can construct the ponds without direct expenditure by using employment guarantee workers.
Workers dig ponds measuring eight metres in length and width. They also dig them to a depth of six feet.
The works include the construction of inlets and outlets to manage the flow of water.
The government will spend Rs 50,000 on employment guarantee labour for each farm pond.
Stone construction around the ponds helps reduce soil erosion. As a result, officials expect the stored water to remain available for longer periods.
The government has fixed pond dimensions based on farmers’ requirements.
So far, 24 farm ponds have been constructed in Muskanipet, Ellanthakunta, Jangamareddypalle, Galipelli and other villages in the mandal.
Meanwhile, work on community farm ponds is underway in Ananthagiri and Sirikonda villages.
Officials said the completed ponds would help farmers conserve rainwater and support agricultural activities.
